The end of support for Windows 10 is fast approaching, is your business ready?

Windows 10 will reach its End of Life (EOL) on the 14th of October 2025. This means, that from this date onwards, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, patches or technical support for devices that run on this operating system.

Though Windows 10 PCs will continue to work after this date, the lack of ongoing maintenance and assistance means that the technology that uses this system will be more vulnerable to security, compliance and operational risks.

Why is Windows 10 no longer supported?

After 10 years, Microsoft will stop providing support for Windows 10 as part of its lifecycle policy, which ensures that products are supported for a specific time before being retired. This lifecycle encourages users to upgrade to their new, more secure and capable operating systems, which in this case, is Windows 11.

Why should I upgrade to Windows 11?

Windows 11 is Microsoft’s latest operating system so it’s fully supported and comes with a host of enhancements that make it safer, more capable and more compliant with industry regulations:

Greater security features: Windows 11 comes with more stringent security requirements and features, which provide better protection against common and complex cyber security threats.

Better performance: It offers advanced features that can more effectively support users now and into the future, with significant performance improvements that make for faster boot times, more efficient resource management and greater processing power.

Streamlined design: The improved operating system also has a new start menu layout, updated icons and a cleaner interface overall, which makes for a simpler, more user-friendly and intuitive experience.

How can I upgrade to Windows 11?

If your company computers are fewer than 5 years old, you should simply be able to download the Windows 11 operating system to your PC but it must be running the latest version of Windows 10 and meet the minimum hardware requirements.

If your computers are too old, you’ll need to consider upgrading your technology to access the new operating system. Run a PC Health Check to find out if your computers are eligible to upgrade.

How can I prepare for Windows 10 End of Life?

It’s important to plan and budget early to avoid any problems at the EOL date. Putting the right systems in place now will ensure you’re well prepared so your business can continue to operate effectively. Here are some actions we recommend taking:

Technology audit: It’s important to review what systems and computers need upgrading or replacing in plenty of time. A technology audit will help you evaluate your technological infrastructure and guide you in choosing the best course of action for your business.

Effective budgeting: Carefully evaluate the costs and time requirements associated with upgrading to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to your business. Consider the cost of purchasing and installing new hardware and any staff training that’s required.

Thorough testing: Ensure you factor in time for extensive testing to account for any teething issues that are likely to occur.

Roll-out changes over time: Whatever you decide to do, gradually upgrading over time will make it easier to deal with any problems as they arise. Rushing changes through at the last minute will likely cause problems and disruption to your team and your customers.
