The word cloud is used a lot these days. It is used as a global term for alot of different types of services. In order to answer the question “What is the cloud?” we need to understand the different categories of cloud services.

What is SPI (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS)?

SPI is an acronym for the most common cloud computing service models, Software as a Service, Platform as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service.

Software as a Service (SaaS) is a software distribution model in which applications are hosted by a vendor or service provider and made available to customers over a network, typically the Internet. An example of this would be Office 365.

Platform as a Service (PaaS) is a paradigm for delivering operating systems and associated services over the Internet without downloads or installation. The business continuity service from Datto fall in to this category.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) involves outsourcing the equipment used to support operations, including storage, hardware, servers and networking components. A good example of this would be the TPS5 service from Fujitsu.
